If we have a higher consciousness, then it stands to reason that there must be a lower consciousness. What also stands to reason is that reaching one’s higher consciousness takes time. It is a growth, a spiritual growth. It is almost guaranteed that to get there, one may go through a lot of trial and error type mistakes, pain and even loss. All and all, getting there we can safely assume, is not an easy task. Because of this, it is a safe bet to say that most people do not live their lives on the higher consciousness plane. Some of us like to think we do, but we still hold on to the most basic trapping of lower consciousness. So, since most of us are roaming around existing on a lower level of consciousness, not paying too much attention to what is happening in our lives, definitely not living in the moment, we are leaving the door open to being driven by our ego. In fact ego has been a mainstay with us all our lives because lower consciousness is the domain of ego.
You may say what is so wrong with having an ego? As long as it doesn’t get blown out of proportion everyone has it, it keeps you safe against evil wishers. Well, yes ego is self-preserving, It wants to maintain itself, so it does give you the ammunition you need to protect it. It does so by telling you that growing spiritually is a huge mistake. Being spiritual will open you up to all kinds of enemies which will cause fear and vulnerability. It makes one believe to take this route is simply irrational thinking. Since most of us fear standing out there alone, this is even more reason for us not to pursue the spiritual route. For those of us who believe strongly in material wealth and its perceived ability to keep you safe, how would you ever trust that not exerting your ego to claim wealth is a good move. However, what you fail to realize is that ego is not of spirit, and we know spirit is of God, ergo ego is not of God. All what God asks of us is diametrically opposed to ego. Ego is of self. Self in the sense that it reserves the right to do whatever it deems necessary to protect self, especially when self’s wishes are not spiritually inclined. This is when it works the hardest because it knows that not to do so is to consider others and that does not work for self. Self needs and wants it all. Sure if you give up ego you leave your self open, but open is what God wants of us and in the long run living a life that is open/transparent, is living a life of truth and though hard in the beginning is becomes easier every day because the freedom it affords you gradually becomes the only way you want to live. What once seemed very courageous, now becomes a necessity.
Going on a spiritual journey is amazing, but it is not something that can be forced. What I know for sure is if ego lives within you, you will not truly be on that journey, but remain in a position of which I call flirting with the idea. The more you naturally let spirituality into your life, the more permanent it will be, not to mention the more sense it will make to you. From that point of view it will be a genuine thing, the only thing, the REAL thing!
